Bird Applique

By Janet Carrillo "damn it Janet, let's crochet!"

Ideas on how to use these appliques...
*These would be great to apply to any project.
*You can add them to kitchen towels,
*turn them into a keychain or fridge magnet.
*You can also make several and make a garland.
*Attach a ribbon to make them into bookmarks.

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS
Width: approx. 2" across from head to tail
...but they can vary based on yarn and hook size.

MATERIALS
*Crochet hook size: 2.5mm & 3.5mm (E)
*Worsted weight yarn: Main Color (3yds), Contrasting Color (1yd) & Orange for the beak (1yd)
*Tapestry Needle

PATTERN NOTES - must-read...
Numbers in ( ) at the end of each round/row indicate the total number of stitches.

Join the orange yarn in the 7th stitch of the second row of the bird, sc in the same stitch.
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

HEART WING with contrasting color; 2.5mm hook

Pull as tightly as possible so no hole is showing through.
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

ASSEMBLE
I recommend pinning the pieces in place before sewing them to make sure you have them in the position you like best before sewing. (Most people like to use the yarn at the end of the finished pieces to sew them in place, but I personally like to use matching thread).
HEART WING...place it in the position you like best.
EYE...embroider it in the position you like best.

Moster Lene kindly translated the pattern in Danish. If you would like the pattern in Danish it can be found HERE.

  21. These birds are precious! I'm in the process of making a whole flock to string together for a garland in my nursery. Thanks for helping me nest as I prepare for my daughter's arrival. When I've got my garland assembled, I'll post a link with pictures. I really love that you included links to the less common crochet terms. Your pattern was easy to follow and clear. Thank you!!!

  24. I really love this pattern, but as a beginner the heart wing instructions are vague. Like, do you make a magic ring first? How many are in the ring? etc. I am just doing trial and error until I figure it out. Thank you!

  25. I love the little birdie, but need it a little larger. Do you have instructions on how to make a larger birdie applique?
